1. ASHYA KING PARENTS REMANDED IN CUSTODY

Brett and Naghemeh King, the parents who removed their critically ill son Ashya King from a hospital in Southampton against doctors’ advice and sparked an international police hunt, have been remanded in custody in Madrid after refusing to consent to their extradition to the UK at an appearance at the High Court in Spain.

2. UKRAINE TROOPS FLEE LUHANSK AIRPORT

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has told Ukraine it should pull its troops back from all areas of its own territory where they “can harm the civilian population” as they fight armed pro-Russian separatists. Ukrainian troops today abandoned the airport of Luhansk . Russia denies it is supporting the rebels.

3. PUPILS FACE ‘TOUGH’ NEW CURRICULUM

Millions of children in England returning to school this week will face the new national curriculum, which has been branded “tough”. Five-year-olds will learn fractions and be taught computer programming and those in early secondary school will have to study at least two Shakespeare plays.

4. MAN UNITED SIGN FALCAO ON LOAN

Manchester United have secured a loan deal for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao on the final day of the transfer window. The Colombian forward will join United for the rest of the season, and the move could be made permanent next year. The deal is a coup for United, who beat rivals Man City and Arsenal to the player.

5. SPY AGENCES TO VET AIR PASSENGERS...

David Cameron is to make it easier for intelligence agencies to access information about airline passengers as fears grow about UK citizens travelling abroad to fight jihad in the middle east. The king of Saudi Arabia has warned that Europe faces attacks in the next month unless it acts decisively.

6. ... AS COALITION DISCUSSES NEW LAWS

The Conservatives and Lib Dem coalition partners are debating anti-terror laws designed to deal with British jihadists who join extremists in overseas conflicts. The Tories want to be able to seize passports and impose travel bans on UK fighters, but the Lib Dems say making British citizens stateless would be illegal.

7. LONDON TUBE TERROR HOAX DISMISSED

London commuters have been told to "keep calm and carry on" after a hoax terror warning went viral. British Transport Police denied that an attack on the Tube network was imminent after the message, saying that the West End would be targeted, began to spread on social networks. Last week the UK terror threat was raised to "severe".

8. JENNIFER LAWRENCE DECRIES NUDE PHOTOS

Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence has said she feels “weird” after naked photographs of her were published on the internet by a hacker who claims to have photographs of 60 other female stars. The pictures were reputedly stolen after an iCloud leak allowed celebrities’ phones to be hacked.

9. ATHLETES FACE BAN ON NOBLE GASES

The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has admitted it has not yet found a reliable test to see if athletes have been breathing the noble gases xenon and argon - the latest performance-enhancing craze - despite having introduced a ban on the substances. The gases are thought to boost red blood cells.

10. HOT TICKET: HAY FEVER REVIVAL

A revival of Noel Coward's classic comedy Hay Fever has opened at Theatre Royal, Bath. Felicity Kendal stars as the theatrical matriarch of the Bohemian Bliss family, who draw their unsuspecting guests into a melodrama of misunderstandings, seductions and revelations. "Extremely entertaining," says The Independent. Until 6 September.
