1. SEX OFFENCES RISING AGAINST CHILDREN

Figures from the NSPCC show that the number of recorded sexual offences against children in England and Wales rose by almost a third in the year up to April 2014, compared to the previous 12 months. There were 31,000 offences - 85 a day. There were significant rises in Scotland and Northern Ireland as well.

2. MAN, 18, HELD OVER CEMETERY MURDER

An 18-year-old man has been arrested after the the "savage and brutal" murder of 14-year-old Jordan Watson, whose body was discovered in a Upperby Cemetery in Carlisle on Tuesday. The teenager died from multiple wounds to the head and neck. The 18-year-old was known to Watson and was held on suspicion of murder.

3. CHRIS EVANS IS NEW TOP GEAR PRESENTER

Radio DJ and former host of TFI Friday, Chris Evans, is to lead an all-new line-up presenting Top Gear, the BBC has announced. Evans replaces Jeremy Clarkson, who was sacked for punching a producer. Evans said he had contacted Clarkson and former presenters Richard Hammond and James May who wished him "good luck".

4. RBS PAYMENTS COULD TAKE DAYS

More than half a million payments to Royal Bank of Scotland and Natwest accounts have gone "missing" following a technical glitch. Wages, tax credits and disability living allowances were among the payments that failed to arrive. RBS said it had fixed the problem, but some transactions would no tbe completed until the weekend.

5. BRADFORD SISTER 'CONTACTS FAMILY'

One of the three Bradford sisters who have gone missing with nine children has "made contact" with her family, amid fears they are in Syria, where their brother is thought to be fighting with extremists. Khadija, Sugra and Zohra Dawood and their nine children disappeared after a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

6. FOO FIGHTERS SCRAP GLASTONBURY GIG

Rock band Foo Fighters have cancelled their Friday headlining slot at the Glastonbury Festival after frontman Dave Grohl fell off a stage in Sweden, fracturing his leg. June gigs in Edinburgh, London and Belgium have also been scrapped. Grohl had surgery on Monday and says it is “just not physically possible” to perform.

7. KENT VOTED TOP EU HOLIDAY DESTINATION

Writers at the guide book publisher Lonely Planet have voted Kent the top summer holiday destination in Europe this year, ahead of County Kerry in Ireland, Normandy in France and the Black Forest in Germany. The revival of seaside towns, a burgeoning gastronomic scene and clean beaches were praised.

8. ESCAPED TIGER KILLS MAN IN TBILISI

A man has been killed by an escaped tiger in Tbilisi after floods swamped the city's zoo, killing hundreds of animals and freeing others. The tiger, which also wounded another man, was tracked down to a warehouse in the capitalof Georgia and shot dead after attempts to sedate it failed. Last weekend's floods killed at least 13 people.

9. MESSAGE IN BOTTLE FROM 1971 WASHES UP

A message in a bottle sent by a 14-year-old boy in 1971 has been found on a beach in Scotland. The note is dated 15 January and was released by one Raymond Davidson, who has not yet been traced, from Carlisle. The Australian couple who found the bottle in far north-east Scotland are keen to track him down.

10. BRIEFING: TRUMP RUNS FOR PRESIDENT

Donald Trump, the billionaire property magnate and reality TV star, has declared that he will seek the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.Speaking from Trump Tower in New York, he launched a long tirade against America's healthcare, immigration and foreign policies, before telling his supporters: "I am officially running for president of the United States and we are going to make our country great again."
