1. Macron presses Trump to stay in Iran nuclear deal

Emmanuel Macron appears close to a diplomatic coup, after US President Donald Trump hinted that he is open to the French president’s suggestion of staying in the existing nuclear accord with Iran but working out a new deal that addresses Trump’s concerns. Macron and his wife, Brigitte, are on a state visit to the US.

2. Immigration scandal ‘will spread beyond Windrush’

MPs and immigration charities say the mistreatment of Commonwealth-born citizens by UK immigration authorities is likely to affect more than just those from Caribbean nations. “Numerous new cases” have been reported affecting people originally from India, Kenya, Cyrpus and Canada, according to The Guardian.

3. Toronto van suspect ‘linked to misogyny group’

A cryptic Facebook message posted in the account of the Toronto van attack suspect Alek Minassian shortly before he allegedly mowed down and killed ten pedestrians on Monday suggests misogyny as a possible motive. The Guardian reports that there is reason to think Minassian was allied to a violent anti-women movement called “incel” - an abbreviation for “involuntarily celibate”.

4. Complaint upheld against Times foster care story

The Independent Press Standards Organisation has upheld a complaint against The Times for its coverage of the story of an allegedly distressed “white Christian child” who was placed in foster care with Muslim families by Tower Hamlets Council. The newspaper did not mention that the girl’s grandmother is a Muslim who speaks no English.

5. Jewish leaders decry Corbyn’s ‘missed opportunity’

The Jewish Leadership Council and the Board of Deputies of British Jews say a meeting with Jeremy Corbyn yesterday was a “disappointing, missed opportunity”, after failing to agree any plan of action to deal with accusations of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party. The Labour leader has promised to tackle the allegations swiftly.

6. Liverpool fan critical after ‘attempted murder’

A 53-year-old Liverpool fan is in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked by Roma fans outside Anfield before yesterday’s Champions League semi-final. Two men from Rome, 25 and 26, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Italians armed with belts and hammers attacked Liverpool fans, The Times says.

7. Cyclist of 82 killed ‘as she went to help son’

An 82-year-old woman who was knocked off her bicycle and killed early on Monday morning was on her way to help her son, who has learning difficulties, with his cleaning job, according to her neighbours in Stroud, Gloucestershire. A man of 39 and woman of 28 were arrested on suspicion of causing the death of Thelma Byard by dangerous driving.

8. TSB accounts back up – but problems remain

TSB customers say they are finally getting access to their bank accounts online following days of problems caused by a bungled IT upgrade, but problems are still being reported. Some account holders said they were not able to access sub-accounts or premier features. The bank faces being fined for incompetence by the industry regulator.

9. UK ticket holder wins Euromillions £121m jackpot

A UK-based lottery player has scooped more than £121m - the third-biggest jackpot ever won in Britain. The ticket holder claimed the Euromillions jackpot with the numbers 20, 23, 28, 30 and 44 and the Lucky Stars 03 and 07. The lottery is also played in Austria, Belgium, France, the Irish Republic, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

10. Briefing: how will Pompeo change US foreign policy?

Mike Pompeo is all but guaranteed to be confirmed as the new US secretary of state this week, replacing the outgoing Rex Tillerson in Donald Trump’s administration.

The US President has repeatedly described himself as a “counterpuncher”, and “the same could be said for Pompeo in his approach to international affairs”, says The Atlantic.
