“These decisions are never taken lightly but always in the interests of the club,” Williams told Sky Sports.

“We are in a results business and over the back end of last season and this season to date, ours have been very disappointing.

“We would like to place on record our appreciation of Tony’s contribution and hard work during a period of transition for the club which included a change of ownership. We wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Gary Megson will take over as caretaker manager while a replacement is found. Names already being mentioned for the job include Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes, Northern Ireland’s Michael O’Neill and former England boss Sam Allardyce.

According to the latest prices by Oddschecker, McInnes is favourite for the job at 4/1. Also linked with Rangers, he was a former West Brom player and captain from 2000 to 2003.

Meanwhile, the Express and Star says Pulis may not be out of work for long as he is now favourite to take over from Chris Coleman as Wales manager.
