The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has once again been in the headlines this week after the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) issued a statement about “extremely rare” cases of blood clots.
The JCVI experts emphasised that the benefits that the vaccine offers against Covid “far outweigh” the risks of an adverse reaction, but government scientists and ministers are still expected to “embark on a media blitz” to persuade the public that the vaccine is still safe, The Times reports.
Violence also flared on the streets of Northern Ireland as loyalist protesters clashed with police. Stormont was recalled amid the violent scenes, which were triggered by the Brexit-imposed Irish Sea border, the decision not to prosecute Sinn Fein officials for an alleged coronavirus breach, and paramilitaries encouraging people in their communities on to the streets.

Talks got under way to revive the Iran nuclear deal, with European officials racing between US and Iranian delegations who will not meet in person during the negotiations scheduled to last 10 days.
In Australia, the ongoing national reckoning after claims of rape and misogyny in the upper echelons of politics continued, with a string of lawmakers hit by allegations in a resurgence of the #MeToo movement.
Russia began massing troops on its border with Ukraine, prompting concerns over a renewed outbreak of violence that is threatening the ceasefire agreement of 2015. And the murder of almost 200 Tigrayan civilians increased fears that a genocide could break out in Africa.
