With just days until Boris Johnson reveals his long-awaited roadmap for ending the UK’s ongoing lockdown, planning has already begun for a mass testing “blitz” to accompany the end of restrictions.

The nationwide “surge” testing campaign will see 400,000 lateral flow tests sent by post to homes and workplaces every day, and has been given the provisional slogan: “Are you ready? Get testing. Go.” The UK is already racing ahead in the international race to inoculate populations, with the head of the government’s vaccine taskforce pledging that supply issues will not slow down the jab campaign,

The success of the rollout paves the way for lockdown lifting and appears to have emboldened Johnson to take what pundits have suggested was a jab of his own at the EU’s far less speedy inoculation push. The prime minister may have raised hackles in Brussels by urging European leaders at a digital G7 meeting today to pool their “collective ingenuity” to tackle the health crisis more effectively.

Claws were also out in the Commons this week when Keir Starmer accused the Tories of leaving Britain “weakened” and “unprepared” to deal with the pandemic. In a set-piece speech laying out his vision for Labour, the opposition leader backed the creation of a British Recovery Bond to give Britons “a stake in our national recovery”.

The world is facing yet another deadly virus, as New Guinea is hit by an Ebola epidemic. The new outbreaks come five years after Ebola ravaged the country, along with Liberia and Sierra Leone.

In political news, a post-mortem has begun in the US into the second failed attempt to impeach Donald Trump. The former president escaped further punishment over the Capitol riots in early January, in a trial that revealed “a party that has grown weary of defending its leader but lacks the fortitude to sever ties”, said the Los Angeles Times.

Back in Europe, countries are split over the use of medical grade face masks in the effort to control the spread of Covid-19.

Some happier tales have been making headlines too though. A Tennessee man proved that his dog really was his best friend by leaving his eight-year-old border collie $5m (£3.5m) in his will.
