“Sleaze” was the word on everybody’s lips this week after Boris Johnson whipped Tory MPs to vote in favour of overhauling the parliamentary standards watchdog.
In what The Times described as “an assault on the integrity of the political system”, the Commons voted in favour of reforming Parliament’s disciplinary system, in an apparent effort to block the suspension of former cabinet minister Owen Paterson for breaching lobbying rules.
All opposition parties opposed the move, with 13 Conservative MPs also rebelling to vote against the plan. Under intense scrutiny, Johnson later U-turned, retreating from the reform proposals and ending Paterson’s career in the process.
