Huawei P30 and P30 Pro unveiled: differences, prices, specs and where to pre-order

The wraps have finally come off Huawei’s new flagship smartphones - the P30 and P30 Pro.

Set to do battle with the iPhone XS and Samsung Galaxy S10, the new devices pack the Chinese smartphone maker’s most powerful processor, the Kirin 980, along with a complex camera system consisting on multiple lenses.

At a glance, the design of the new handsets isn’t radically different to last year’s P20 and P20 Pro. However, look a little closer and you’ll notice a display with significantly thinner bezels and a larger housing for the new rear-facing camera system.

Fans won’t have long to wait to get their hands on the new phones. Pre-orders are now open and there’s only a week to go before the devices arrive in stores.

In the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about the new flagship phones:

What’s the difference between the P30 and the P30 Pro?

On the surface, the P30 and P30 Pro look almost identical to each other.

Both models come with OLED displays with resolutions of 2340x1080 pixels and they both use the company’s new ultra-thin design for the phone’s “notch”, a small indent at the top of the display containing the phone’s front-facing camera, says TechCrunch.

The most notable difference, however, is in how the screen is designed. The P30 has a conventional display that curves downwards around the edges and sides. On the other hand, the P30 Pro has deeper curves at either edge of its display, the tech site says, similar to last year’s Mate 20 Pro.

The P30 Pro’s measures in at 6.47in, whereas the P30’s display is slightly smaller at 6.1in.

Finally, the P30 Pro’s rear-facing camera assembly comes with a time-of-flight sensor, which directs a beam of infrared light to improve depth of field effects.

What cameras do they have?

The entry-level mobile gets a trio of rear-facing cameras, consisting of a 40-megapixel wide angle system, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. The latter offers a 3x optical zoom, 5x zoom with the assistance of the phone’s software and a digital-only 30x zoom.

The P30 Pro is equipped with a similar camera system as the regular model, though there are a few differences.

Firstly, the range-topping handset gets an extra lens in the form of the aforementioned time-of-flight sensor, says Android Central.

The P30 Pro’s lenses are also marginally better than the base model. For instance, the 40-megapixel lens has an aperture of f/1.6, meaning it’s capable of letting in more light than the P30’s f/1.8 lens.

Meanwhile, the P30 Pro’s ultra-wide angle lens shoots 20-megapixel photos, and the 8-megapixel telephoto camera offers 5x optical zoom and offers a digital zoom of up to 50x.

Both devices get same front-facing camera: single-lens 32-megapixel system with an aperture of f/2.0.

What colours are they available in?

The P30 is available in four colours: Amber Sunrise, Breathing Crystal, Aurora and Black.

Where can you pre-order them?

Customers who pre-order their devices on a contract through most mobile stores, such as Carphone Warehouse, can get their hands on a free Sonos One speaker.

Buyers have until 4 April to get their orders in, before deliveries get underway on 5 April.

The entry-entry-level P30 start at £699 and gets buyers 6GB of ram and 128GB of storage, the London Evening Standard reports.

There are two versions of the P30 Pro to choose from: the base-spec £899 model with 8GB of ram and 128GB of storage, and the top-spec 512GB version for £1,099.
