Nightmares do come true: Passengers spent more than 28 hours on an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi to San Francisco this weekend, stuck on the tarmac for more than 12 hours before making the long, 16-hour journey to the U.S.

The Abu Dhabi Airport was temporarily closed Saturday night due to fog, which delayed several flights, including Flight 183, Reuters reports. Passengers tweeted that they were not allowed to get off the plane while they were still on the tarmac and were not given any food while they waited. Etihad tweeted an apology, and added that the delay was "beyond our control." Etihad also said it would waive cancellation fees for anyone whose flight was delayed due to fog.
