Boston's St. Patrick's Day parade organizers have announced that a group representing gay veterans will be allowed to march in the parade next year.

The South Boston Allied War Veterans council voted 5-4 on Monday night to allow members of the group OutVets, which represents lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender veterans, to participate in the parade.

The news marks a dramatic shift for the annual event — in 1995, the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council won a Supreme Court case allowing them to ban gay organizations from the parade.
