General Motors' enormous recall effort broadened Monday, as the company announced six new recalls affecting 7.6 million vehicles. The latest round of recalls pertains to cars sold as early as 1997.

Combined with the dozens of recalls announced earlier this year, GM has now issued recalls for nearly 30 million vehicles. For perspective, GM sold 9.7 million vehicles in 2013 during what was considered a particularly good year for the company.
