In a landmark first, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a ruling striking down Utah's ban on same-sex marriage. The decision marks the first time a federal appellate court has found such a ban unconstitutional since the Supreme Court last summer declared that the federal government must recognize same-sex couples.

The three-member court put its ruling on hold as it will likely be appealed to the Supreme Court.

The ruling came on the same day that a federal judge in Indiana struck down that state's ban on same-sex marriage.
