Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, a lifetime San Diego Padre and one of the greatest hitters ever to play the game, has died. He was 54.
An eight-time batting champ, Gwynn ranks 20th all-time in batting average; his 3,141 hits rank 19th. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007 with an astounding 97.6 percent of the vote.
Mr. Padre had been on leave from San Diego State, where he is the team's baseball coach, for cancer treatment. An immensely respected man and ambassador for the game, he will be greatly missed. --Jon Terbush
