Don't worry, Chicago meant to turn its river a disgusting neon green
Chicago is home to one of the nation's largest Irish communities, and for more than four decades the city has dyed its river green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. So how do they turn the Chicago River green? Hint: it's not with the help of some overly intoxicated revelers who've quaffed too much green beer. Rather, the city dumps some 25 pounds of orange powder into the water, resulting in a harmless — if unappetizing — festive hue.
