Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday urged the federal government to better track instances when police fire their weapons or are fired upon.
Speaking at a Justice Department event honoring Martin Luther King Jr., Holder said obtaining "better, more accurate data on the scope of the challenges we face" was the "first step" toward restoring trust between police and communities. Though the FBI tracks "justifiable" homicides involving law enforcement officers, recent shootings of civilians have raised questions about whether the data is incomplete.
