Pop star Taylor Swift loves New York. And despite the mockery surrounding her being anointed the official New York City Tourism Welcome Ambassador, Swift is doing more for the city than explaining what a bodega is to out-of-towners.

Last October, Swift made a promise to donate the proceeds from her album's opening song, "Welcome to New York," to city schools. Though the singer herself has not made an official announcement, Capital New York confirmed the $50,000 donation to the Department of Education today.

Considering 1989 sold 1.287 copies in its first week, the song has likely earned more than that sum, so it's possible this could be the first of multiple installments, as Spin points out.
