Officials announced Tuesday that a U.S. military helicopter with eight people on board has gone missing during an aid mission to help Nepal's earthquake victims.
U.S. Army Col. Steve Warren told The Associated Press that a nearby Indian helicopter heard a radio conversation about a possible fuel issue. AP reports that officials are "hopeful" the aircraft hasn't crashed and is only out of communication, since no smoke has been seen in the area where it went missing. The UH-1Y was carrying two Nepalese soldiers and six U.S. marines and disappeared over Charikot, Nepal, around 10:00 p.m. local time.
Nepal's military is searching for the helicopter on foot, Warren told AP. The military is searching the area near the copter's second aid destination for a possible landing. Other U.S. aircraft also searched for the helicopter on Tuesday.
