An Amtrak train involved in a fatal crash Tuesday night in Philadelphia was traveling 106 miles per hour just before derailing, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
The speed limit in the section of track where the train derailed is 50 mph. A preliminary investigation determined the train's engineer induced emergency braking seconds before the derailment, but that only reduced the train's speed to 102 mph. Investigators have yet to speak to the engineer, a spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board, Robert Sumwalt, said Wednesday afternoon in a press conference.
At least seven people died and hundreds were injured in the accident.
