Judge dismisses Ray Rice's domestic violence charges

Ray Rice's legal issues stemming from an assault last year on his then-fiancée, now-wife, are over as a judge on Thursday dismissed domestic violence charges against the former Baltimore Ravens running back. The move was expected after Rice completed an intervention program to avoid trial.
The light punishment rankled critics who felt Rice was getting preferential treatment because of his fame. Acceptance into the pretrial intervention program is extremely rare in domestic violence cases; it was granted in only one percent of such cases in New Jersey between 2010-13, according to an Outside the Lines investigation.
The NFL initially suspended Rice for two games last year before suspending him indefinitely after graphic footage surfaced of him knocking out Janay Rice in an Atlantic City elevator. An arbitrator later vacated the punishment, deeming it "arbitrary."
