In western Afghanistan, at least 11 soldiers were killed in an attack by the Taliban, officials said Monday.
Ehnsanullah Hayat, spokesman for the governor of Herat, told AFP that the soldiers were riding in pick-up trucks in the Karukh district of Herat when they were killed in a Taliban ambush. A spokesman for the army said four soldiers were also wounded. The Taliban has not claimed responsibility, but launched an offensive against government forces in late April.
