Three firefighters were killed and four injured Wednesday while battling a wildfire near the town of Twisp, Washington, authorities said.

Fires in the area are covering about 50 square miles, and close to 4,000 homes have been evacuated, Okanogan County Emergency Management department spokeswoman Angela Seydel told The Associated Press. "It is really bad out there," she added. "The fires have just exploded." The blaze is one of roughly 100 substantial fires taking place across the western part of the United States.
