2016's newest presidential candidate? Eccentric antivirus software titan John McAfee.
The latest candidate to jump into the presidential race won't be running as a Democrat or a Republican, or with the support of any other party on the books. Antivirus software creator John McAfee reportedly plans to run for president with the support of "a new party yet to be announced." McAfee reportedly filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission Tuesday, and is expected to make an official announcement later Wednesday.
McAfee, who describes himself in his Twitter profile as an "eccentric millionaire" who is "still alive," told Wired Tuesday that his advisers had been "pressing [him] to run," though he said he is "still in a quandary about whether to run myself or find someone else for my party." McAfee added that he plans to focus on technology issues, a topic he says the government is currently "illiterate" on.
McAfee is best known for his antivirus software company, which he founded in the late 1980s and with which he is no longer affiliated. More recently, McAfee made headlines in 2012 after he was "detained in Guatemala on suspicion that he'd entered the country illegally," The Daily Beast reports, and he also reportedly once "evaded investigators in Belize who wanted to question him in connection to his neighbor's death" as a person of interest.
