Rep. Elijah Cummings says the Benghazi hearing is 'going downhill'
During a break in Thursday's Benghazi hearing, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) told CNN's Dana Bash that so far, "nothing new" has been uncovered during Hillary Clinton's testimony before the House Select Committee on Benghazi.
"Things are going downhill," he said. "Basically they are covering the same ground over and over again, information that we've had in some instances for two or three years. I think it's time to wrap this up." Cummings made his comments shortly after 6 p.m. ET, and said he understood the hearing would probably go on for another two-and-a-half hours.
Cummings said the Republicans on the committee have unearthed "nothing new. They've drifted everywhere but Benghazi, and that was my concern from the very beginning. I think Hillary Clinton has been very transparent, clearly she knows the subject matter, and she's been very clear, even on things they felt, I guess, were smoking guns that didn't end up being that." Earlier in the hearing, Cummings said that "Republicans are squandering millions of taxpayer dollars on this abusive effort to derail Secretary Clinton's campaign," and said it was "time now for Republicans to end this taxpayer-funded fishing expedition."
