Former Rhode Island Gov. and Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a long-shot candidate in the Democratic presidential primary, plans to drop out of the race on Friday, his campaign has announced. Chafee will make a formal statement at a Democratic National Committee meeting in downtown Washington later today, where he plans to say that, "after much thought, I have decided to end my campaign for president today. I would like to take this opportunity one last time to advocate for a chance be given to peace."

The Republican-turned-Democrat is the second candidate to drop out of the Democratic primary this week, three days after former Virginia Senator Jim Webb ended his bid; Vice President Joe Biden also announced this week that he would not be joining the race.
