In Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi officially wins her seat in Parliament
On Wednesday, Myanmar's electoral commission announced the results from 61 more seats in Parliament, the latest batch of winners and losers trickling in from Sunday's election. Among the latest certified victors is opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has now officially won her seat representing the Kawhmu district in Yangon state with 54,676 votes (the commission didn't say how many voters her rival from the ruling party won). Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party says it won a huge majority in Parliament, and now that Suu Kyi has secured her seat, she is set to head the next government.
Malaysia's military-drafted constitution bars Suu Kyi from being named president, since she has family members (sons and late husband) who are British citizens. But NLD founder Tin Oo told Radio Free Asia on Wednesday that he thinks she will become president anyway. "That's why I am helping and working for her," he said. Suu Kyi, he added, "will start working for reconciliation first. She also cares about rules and laws and we still need to amend the 2008 constitution."
