One suspect is dead and four police officers injured following a joint counterterrorism operation on Tuesday between Belgian and French authorities, officials said.
The raid at a house in the Forest section of Brussels targeted a group of people linked to those already charged in last November's terror attacks in Paris, a police source told NBC News. The Belgian federal prosecutor's office said at least one person started shooting at officers as they entered the doorway, injuring three. The fourth officer was hurt in a later exchange of gunfire, and a gunman holding a Kalashnikov was killed, the prosecutor's office said.
Nearby schools were evacuated, and people were told to stay inside their homes. The prosecutor's office said it's not known if any suspects fled the scene, and the officers sustained minor injuries.
