Everybody Loves Raymond's Doris Roberts dies at 90
Emmy-award winning actress Doris Roberts, best known for her role as meddlesome Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond, died Sunday. She was 90.
Roberts received five Emmy Awards, earning one in 1983 for a guest appearance on St. Elsewhere, and four for her work on Everybody Loves Raymond. TMZ first reported the news Monday afternoon, and Roberts' co-star, Patricia Heaton, confirmed it on Twitter. "My wonderful TV mother-in-law and ELR nemesis Doris Roberts was a consummate professional from whom I learned so much," Heaton wrote. "She was funny and tough and loved life."
Roberts was born Doris May Green in St. Louis, and briefly studied journalism at New York University. She made her Broadway debut in 1955 in The Time of Your Life and appeared in her first film, Something Wild, in 1961. Over the course of her career, she had guest roles in numerous television shows, including Soap, All in the Family, Rhoda, Full House, Perfect Strangers, Desperate Housewives, and Grey's Anatomy, and in 2002, testified before the Senate Special Committee on Aging about age discrimination in Hollywood. She is survived by her son, Michael, and three grandchildren.
