Tim Kaine: Donald Trump wants a 'deportation nation'
Tim Kaine and Mike Pence clashed over immigration during Tuesday night's vice presidential debate, with Kaine saying Hillary Clinton wants to see "comprehensive immigration reform," while Donald Trump believes in a "deportation nation."
Under Clinton, there will be "bipartisan reform," with "keeping families together" the top goal, Kaine said. The Democrats' plan also involves focusing "enforcement efforts on those who are violent," as well as "more border control and a path for citizenship for those who work hard, pay taxes, play by the rules, and pass background checks." Trump has "proposed to deport 16 million people," with a deportation force going from "house to house, school to school, business to business" to find them, Kaine said.
Pence called this "nonsense," and said the Democratic plan is just "open borders" and "amnesty," to which Kaine compared it to Ronald Reagan's plan from 1986. When moderator Elaine Quijano of CBS News asked Pence if undocumented immigrants would be forcibly removed under Trump, he skated around the answer, instead saying Trump has "laid out a series of priorities" that "begins with border security."
