Tropical Storm Florence expected to hit the East Coast as a hurricane

Tropical Storm Florence is expected to increase in intensity and slam the East Coast as a hurricane next week. The storm's anticipated path will take it south of Bermuda but north of Florida and the Caribbean, likely making landfall in Georgia or the Carolinas.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) has already declared a state of emergency so his state can receive federal funding to deal with the storm's probable damage. "While it's still too early to know the storm's path, we know we have to be prepared," Cooper said.

The peak of Atlantic hurricane season is Sept. 10.
