Ruth Carter becomes the first black winner of the costume design Oscar for Black Panther

Ruth Carter just made history at the 2019 Oscars.
Carter won the Academy Award on Sunday for Best Costume Design for Black Panther, becoming the first ever black winner in this category, per NBC News.
"This has been a long time coming," Carter said in her acceptance speech.

Prior to Black Panther, Carter was known for her collaboration with Spike Lee, having worked on films of his such as Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, the latter of which earned the designer her first Oscar nomination. She was also previously nominated for Amistad.
This is also Marvel Studios' first time winning an Academy Award.
Carter's win was followed by Hannah Beachler taking home the Oscar for Best Production Design for Black Panther, making her the first black winner in that category as well.
