GOP senators introduce resolution calling on IOC to move 2022 Winter Olympics out of China

The 2022 Winter Olympics have entered the United States-China showdown.

On Monday, Sens. Todd Young (R-Ind.) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) led a group of GOP senators in introducing a resolution calling on the International Olympic Committee to find a new host for the 2022 winter games, which will take place in Beijing, unless the Chinese government "immediately addresses its egregious and numerous violations of human rights," including "committing genocide against the Uighurs in Xinjiang, restricting the human rights of Hong Kongers, and threatening Taiwan."

It remains to be seen if the resolution will carry any weight with the IOC, but it's worth keeping an eye on the 2022 games with tensions rising between Washington and Beijing. Historically, the Olympics have played a significant role in geopolitics, perhaps most notably — from an American perspective at least — when the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow at the height of the Cold War.
