Voters trust Nancy Pelosi more than Trump, poll shows

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) came out on top of the government shutdown, and also on top of the newest Quinnipiac University poll.

When it comes to "issues that are important to you," 49 percent of voters say they trust Pelosi to address them, compared to 42 percent who say they trust President Trump, the poll released Tuesday shows. Voters also resoundingly blamed Trump and congressional Republicans for the government shutdown over Democrats, 56-34 percent.

The government lost funding in December when Trump refused to sign any bill without money for a border wall. Democrats offered money for border security but not a wall, a proposal 61 percent of Quinnipiac respondents say they support. Of all the parties, gender, age, and racial groups Quinnipiac mapped, just Republicans said they opposed the Democratic proposal, 62-32 percent. A full 66 percent oppose Trump using emergency powers to build a wall, and 68 percent oppose shutting down the government over it, per the poll.

Still, just 38 percent of those surveyed say they approve of Democrats in Congress. That number seems low, but it's their highest rating since a July 2009 Quinnipiac poll. Republicans got a 30 percent approval rating this time around.

Trump's approval rating is has also fallen from the last Quinnipiac survey, down from 41 percent on Jan. 15 to 38 percent now. That last survey came just after Trump's brief border wall speech in the midst of the government shutdown.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,004 registered voters from Jan. 25-28 via landline and cell phone with a 3.7 percent margin of error.
