A criminal investigation has been launched after footage of an unidentified man appearing to urinate on a Kellogg's factory assembly line in the US was posted online.

The video has been condemned by the breakfast cereal-maker and the US Food and Drug Administration.

Kellogg's said it "immediately" alerted law enforcement and regulators following its discovery of the film.

"We are outraged by this completely unacceptable situation and we will work closely with authorities to prosecute to the full extent of the law," it said in a statement.

According to The Guardian, an internal investigation found the video was recorded in 2014, at a factory in Memphis, Tennessee.

A statement from the company said products "potentially affected" would now be past their use-by dates.

"Products that could have been potentially affected were Rice Krispies Treats, Rice Krispies Treats cereal and puffed rice cake products, all of which would be past expiration date," Kellogg's told WREG News in Memphis.

It is believed the video was shot at a time when the company was in dispute with workers over labour laws and may have been an example of non-violent direct action.

Kellogg's has said it is conducting a separate investigation in order to identify the man in question.
