An Australian bride surprised her wedding guests with a bouquet of doughnuts rather than flowers over the weekend.

Paige Kirk, 23, tied the knot with her long-term partner Steven in rural NSW, but “it wasn’t the country setting that had guests gasping with delight,” says Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

A video uploaded to Dessert Boxes’ Instagram account shows Paige swapping her traditional flowers for the baked goods.

"We wanted the wedding to be a bit different and really reflect who we are as a couple," she explained to the BBC, adding that the guests "loved them".

"Me and my husband Steven thought it would be different, fun and light hearted," Kirk said.

Despite their tempting appearance, she said her bridal party resisted eating their doughnuts on the day.

"We had plenty of goodies beforehand so we were too full too eat them," she said.

The bouquets were donated in a competition by a company that wanted to create an alternative to flower gifts, but Kirk was the first bride to take the edible bouquets down the aisle.

Photos of her and her bridesmaids with their unusual bouquets have been commented on thousands of times on Instagram.
