The Partridge Family singer and 1970s teen heart-throb David Cassidy died on Tuesday at the age of 67.

The US pop star and actor was admitted to a Florida hospital last week with multiple organ failure. Earlier this year he revealed that he was battling dementia and planned to stop touring to “enjoy life”.

“David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years,” his publicist told CNN after confirming his death.

Cassidy, the son of actors Jack Cassidy and Evelyn Ward, rose to fame as Keith Partridge, the lead singer in his TV sitcom family’s band. His musical and acting career continued to flourish after the show ended and he sold more than 30 million records during his 50-year career, the BBC says.

At the height of his fame in the 1970s, his fan club reportedly had more members than those of The Beatles and Elvis Presley combined, Rolling Stones reports.

Cassidy spoke openly about his struggles with alcohol in recent years, after being arrested for drink-driving three times and attending rehab.

A host of celebrities have paid tribute to the late singer, sharing memories of his kindness and candour on Twitter.

Many remembered Cassidy’s impact on their lives.

Fans say his music will live on.
