Cyberpunk 2077: trailer, pre-orders and release

After six years of rumours and a handful of preview clips, video gamers have finally been given an in-depth look at the futuristic role-playing game (RPG) Cyberpunk 2077.

Developed by CD Projekt Red, the Polish games studio behind the acclaimed The Witcher series, Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a fictional sci-fi world that seems to be far more gritty than the utopian environments seen in popular RPGs such as the Mass Effect and Deus Ex games.

Cyberpunk 2077 will have different gameplay elements to CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher series, The Verge reports.

Gamers play The Witcher 3 from a third person viewpoint, where the camera is placed behind the main character, the tech site says. In Cyberpunk 2077, however, the game is played from a first-person perspective.

CD Projekt Red hasn’t given a launch date for the sci-fi RPG just yet, but the release of the gameplay trailer suggests the game’s arrival isn’t far off.

In the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about Cyberpunk 2077:

When is it out?

A release date for Cyberpunk 2077 has yet to be announced, but TechRadar says the game could arrive early next year.

Where to pre-order it

Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game can be pre-ordered for £54.99 from Amazon. PC copies are expected to arrive at a later date.

What we learnt from the trailer

CD Projekt Red initially showed journalists the gameplay trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles in June, two months before releasing it to the public.

Now that the 48-minute trailer is out, it’s clear to see that the sci-fi adventure will be a set in a gritty open-world cityscape.

The game’s world appears to be inspired by the sci-fi dystopia setting of the Bladerunner movies, says CNet.

The trailer is set in Night City, a fictional place filled with colourful neon signs, lofty skyscrapers and gritty city streets. As CD Projekt Red’s previous open-world games feature numerous settings, from towns to forests, Cyperpunk 2077 may also come with other environments.

Drivable cars appear in the game, which should make crossing the sprawling city a breeze. Gamers can fire guns from their vehicles and take part in high-speed car chases with their enemies as well as the city’s police force.

Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 will feature a number of customisation options that allow players to create a unique character, which they’ll play throughout the game, says Eurogamer.

Not only can a gamer change their character’s sex, physique and hairstyle, they can also add “implants” that can significantly change how the game is played, the gaming site says.

Gamers can kit out their character with bionic arms for superhuman strength, for example. These arms can be used to sling foes into walls, or crawl over ceilings to avoid being seen by enemies.

Much like The Witcher series, gamers are able to engage in conversation with other characters. The way a gamer talks to another character can have a big impact on the Cyberpunk 2077’s story, allowing them to build up relationships with some people – and make enemies of others.
