As Russia’s president welcomes 6,000 athletes and the world’s cameras to Sochi, more than 2,000 performers will participate in a pageant celebrating the host country’s rich culture. Guest commentator David Remnick of The New Yorker will help fill the four-hour broadcast by deciphering the symbolism. NBC’s coverage of the 18 days of competition starts a night earlier.
