Gender wage gap shrinks

According to new data from Pew Research, the wage gap for American women under 32 has shrunk to 7 percent. But among all ages, women make 16 percent less than men, and Millennial-age women are just “as pessimistic as their mothers and grandmothers regarding gender equality.”

Sales of diet soda drop

America is falling out of love with diet soda. The sales of low- and zero-calorie soda have fallen 6.8 percent in the past year, compared with a 2.2 percent drop in the sales of regular soda. Experts say consumers are worried about possible health risks from artificial sweeteners.

Government aid makes a difference

After accounting for government aid such as food stamps, researchers from Columbia University have found that the share of poor people in the U.S. has dropped from 26 percent in 1967 to just 16 percent in 2012.

Chinese buyers purchased more than $8 billion in U.S. real estate in 2012. According to Juwai.com, a website where Chinese buyers browse global real estate listings, New York City and Los Angeles are the most popular investment destinations, followed by Philadelphia and Detroit.
