Best apps for meeting new people
Tinder; Martini; Highlight
Tinder started last fall and became an instant hit. Unlike a traditional dating website, this app creates your profile for you, using photos and details from your Facebook account. Instantly, it displays other singles near you, and enables any two of you to launch an online chat. (Free; iOS or Android)
Martini aims to take the awkwardness out of first dates by getting friends involved. It uses Facebook data to set up group profiles for you and two friends, then lets your posse browse for three friends of the opposite gender. “Hopefully, you’ve got yourself a triple date.” (Free; iOS or Android)
Highlight aims to connect people less as potential dates than as friends or business contacts. Using GPS, it’ll send you an alert when a person walks by who has mutual friends on Facebook or shares your interests. (Free; iOS or Android)
