Charity of the week: World Monuments Fund
The World Monuments Fund is dedicated to saving important archaeological and cultural sites worldwide.
The World Monuments Fund (wmf.org) is dedicated to saving important archaeological and cultural sites worldwide. Since 1965, WMF has worked in over 90 countries to preserve sites like New Mexico’s Taos Pueblo and the Temple of Hercules, one of Rome’s oldest surviving buildings. At dozens of historic sites each year, World Monuments Fund experts provide technical and financial support for conservation projects and train local communities in preservation techniques. The organization also coordinates rapid-response missions to cultural sites that have been damaged by natural or man-made disasters. Ongoing projects include preserving Peru’s San Pedro Apóstol de Andahuaylillas, known as the Sistine Chapel of the Andes, and restoration of the Qianlong Garden in China’s Forbidden City.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
