The Posse Foundation (possefoundation.org) identifies and recruits public high school students with exceptional academic and leadership potential and helps them attend some of the best universities in the U.S., where they receive four-year, full-tuition scholarships. Since 1989, the foundation has supported more than 4,200 students from diverse racial and economic backgrounds in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, and Washington, D.C.; 90 percent have either graduated or are currently attending college. In order to help students adjust to campus life, 10 scholars attend college together as a “posse,’ acting as a support network and helping one another succeed. The nomination and application process begins in the fall.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
