Show of the week: Independent Lens: Hell and Back Again
This Oscar-nominated documentary juxtaposes a sargeant's role in the war with Afghanistan with his attempts to re-enter civilian life.
In 2009, U.S. Marine Sgt. Nathan Harris led his unit through Afghan villages, trying to locate Taliban members while attempting to convince village elders that America was there to bring freedom. This moving, Oscar-nominated documentary juxtaposes Harris’s leadership role in Afghanistan with intimate scenes of his return to North Carolina and attempts to re-enter civilian life while recovering from a severe leg injury. Cameras follow him and his wife as the young soldier battles pain and faces an uncertain future. Monday, May 28, at 10 p.m., PBS; check local listings
