Charity of the week: African Wildlife Foundation
The foundation has played a vital part in protecting Africa’s wild landscapes.
The African Wildlife Foundation (awf.org) sees Africa’s wild landscapes as key to the continent’s prosperity. Founded in 1961, the organization has played a vital part in protecting African elephants, mountain gorillas, and rhinos. Its African Heartlands program is dedicated to conserving tracts of land larger than any park or preserve, which often span borders and are home to important ecosystems and species. Working with governments, communities, and businesses, AWF helps develop sustainable and data-driven conservation programs that also improve the livelihoods of local people. To help train the next generation of environmental managers, the organization’s Charlotte Fellowship funds emerging African scholars pursuing conservation-related research.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
