At first glance, Todd Chilton’s paintings appear to be exercises in symmetry. The Chicago-based artist’s geometric abstractions present borderline 3-D landscapes, often in bright color, that work themselves out in intricate and near-perfect patterns over paper or linen. But close examination reveals the presence of deliberate imperfections—a triangle that widens into a rectangle as it hits a canvas edge, a disruption in a color pattern. By drawing attention to obvious mistakes of the hand, both spontaneous and deliberate, Chilton creates humor and surprise from the fact that our efforts to achieve precision will always be, on some level, imprecise. At Rhona Hoffman, 118 N. Peoria St., Chicago, (312) 455-1990. Through Dec. 3. Prices range from $800 to $7,200.
