Charity of the week: Polaris Project
Polaris Project provides social services to victims of sex trafficking and forced labor.
Polaris Project (polarisproject.org) is dedicated to combating human trafficking and modern-day slavery in the U.S. and abroad. Named for the North Star, which guided fugitive slaves along the Underground Railroad, the Washington, D.C.–based organization provides social services such as transitional housing, job training, legal advocacy, and therapy to victims of sex trafficking and forced labor. It also works with law enforcement across the U.S. to perform crisis interventions for possible victims of trafficking. It received nearly 12,000 toll-free calls last year to its National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator ranks not-for-profit organizations on the effectiveness of their programs, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
