Charity of the week: UCP Wheels for Humanity

Since 1996, the California-based charity has donated more than 50,000 wheelchairs to people in 68 countries.

UCP Wheels for Humanity (ucpwfh.org) provides custom-fitted wheelchairs to disabled children and adults in developing countries, where as many as 100 million people cannot otherwise find or afford them. Since 1996, the California-based charity has donated more than 50,000 wheelchairs—each one individually adjusted to a recipient’s size and disability—to people in 68 countries. With an eye to limitations in the developing world, the organization has also helped develop a pediatric wheelchair that can be manufactured for just $150 and adjusted with a single tool. This month, UCP Wheels for Humanity representatives will travel to Afghanistan, Nigeria, and the Philippines to work with local health-care partners and fit new recipients for their equipment.

Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator ranks not-for-profit organizations on the effectiveness of their programs, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
