What seemed an odd choice for star Jim Carrey and director Ben Stiller in 1996 now “seems like a seminal film,” said The New York Times. This “sometimes violent, entirely despairing” film about a sociopathic cable guy set a standard for “cringe comedies” that the rest haven’t matched.

Without Danny Boyle’s kinetic direction and James Franco’s Oscar-nominated performance, this film about a trapped canyon hiker could’ve been a drag, said USA Today. Boyle creates a “sense of openness and hope,” while Franco’s “myriad of emotions” pull us into his temporary prison.

Bambi

(Disney, $40)

“One of Disney’s more artistic accomplishments,” Bambi reaches new heights on Blu-ray, said the Salt Lake City Deseret News. The animated classic about a fawn and his furry friends was first released in 1942, but “it hasn’t dated at all.” It remains “one of the greatest animated movies of all time.”
