Steele isn’t quitting

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele plans to seek a second term.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele will seek a second term when the committee holds its election in January. Although he headed the party during its historic pickup of 63 House seats in November’s midterm congressional elections, many Republicans expected Steele to end his tenure, which was marked by financial disarray, including more than $15 million of debt, staff turmoil, and controversial remarks, such as Steele’s comment that “white Republicans” are “scared of black folks.” Steele’s likely opponents include former committee general counsel Reince Priebus and Maria Cino, who oversaw the GOP’s 2008 national convention.
