Judge orders man to quit smoking
A Hawaiian man has been ordered by a judge to quit smoking for a year. Makaio Bachman-Majamay, 19, was facing arson charges after his flicked cigarette set fire to the wooden roof of the Wei Wei Bar-B-Q restaurant. But after Bachman-Majamay bargained down to a lesser charge, Judge Joel August sentenced him to community service, a $1,025 fine, and a whole year of no smoking. “That means no cigarettes,” said August. “Perhaps it will add about 10 or 15 years to his life if he stops smoking permanently.”

Jessica Simpson has called off the search for her dog, which was snatched by a coyote last week, says the London Sun. Simpson was watching Daisy cavort in her California yard when the coyote snatched the fluffy little “Malti-Poo” cross-breed and ran off. Simpson plastered her neighborhood with posters offering a reward for Daisy’s return, but has now accepted that the coyote isn’t returning the dog, and she’s in mourning. “There are no leads,” a spokeswoman said.
Bulgarian lottery defies the odds
Bulgarian lottery officials are in full damage-control mode after the same six numbers came up twice in the same week—defying odds of roughly one in 4 million. Both drawings took place on live television, which organizers insist makes fraud impossible. But suspicious critics have observed that the second drawing had 18 separate winners. “We are absolutely stunned to see such a freak coincidence,” said a lottery spokeswoman, “but it did happen.”
