Tip of the week: How to nab a choice campsite
Or, how not to end up near the outhouse
Network. Reserveamerica.com takes bookings for hundreds of public and private campsites all across America. Recreation.gov handles “national parks, forests, and other federal lands.” Both websites let you look at a campground map, but, unsurprisingly, the good spots fill fast.
X marks the plot. Campsites have good and bad spots. Some are oceanside, others toilet-side. Know when reservations become available: It’s usually six but can be up to nine months in advance.
Move fast. When sites do open up, the best “sell out within minutes.” Know exactly what time your desired site begins accepting bookings (for federal lands, it’s “10 a.m. ET”). At the hour of reckoning, imagine you’re after “Stones tickets.” Work the “phone and online systems concurrently.”
